The use of any trademark that identifies, or is associated with, Northeastern University may not be used without the prior expressed written authorization of Northeastern University (represented by the Manager of University Trademarks and Licensing) and is subject to the licensing requirements of these guidelines.
Northeastern University trademarks include any word, phrase, symbol, design, color, product configuration, group of letters, or any combination thereof that has been adopted and used by the University to identify and distinguish its goods or services from those of others.
These trademarks represent the identity of Northeastern University and are protected assets of the institution. Proper use of these marks helps maintain the integrity and reputation of the Northeastern brand.

How do I obtain a license?
Northeastern University partners with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) to assist in the management of its licensing program. Obtaining a license requires completing the licensing application process through CLC. Please visit https://clc.com/get-licensed/ for more details.

How long does it take to obtain approval from Northeastern?
Please allow 4-6 weeks to complete a standard licensing application.
What kinds of products can’t be licensed?
Prohibited uses of Northeastern’s name and trademarks include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Violate the University’s policies or practices and/or applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations;
- Discriminate or imply discrimination against any persons or groups based on age, color, gender, gender identity, disability status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, weight or in any other way that conflicts with University standards;
- Promote or oppose a political candidate, office holder, party, or ballot question;
- On products, images, and designs the University deems to be racist, sexist, hateful, demeaning, or including or implying obscene, indecent, lewd sexual acts or profane material;
- Are inherently dangerous or present an unacceptable risk, including knives, firearms, weapons, and explosives;
- Constitute a personal attack on individuals either in public or private;
- Promote use of tobacco, cannabis, or cannabis-related products.
- Promote illegal or irresponsible use of alcohol.
Do I have to submit art for approval?
Yes. All officially licensed Northeastern vendors are required to submit artwork for approval prior to manufacturing. This should be done via the CLC’s Brand Manager 360 portal.
Does Northeastern collect royalties?
All Northeastern licensing agreements administered through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) include a royalty rate—this is a percentage of sales (both internal and external orders) of licensed products that is paid to Northeastern University.
This fee is the sole responsibility of the vendor. It should be considered when quoting prices and not included as a separate line item charged back to the university.
Licensees are required to report and remit royalties to CLC on a monthly basis.
These royalties contribute to supporting the university’s mission, initiatives, and students across all areas of the institution.

What does Northeastern do if unlicensed merchandise is discovered in the marketplace?
Northeastern University is committed to protecting and preserving its trademark rights. Any unlicensed use of Northeastern University trademarks may result in legal action.
How does Northeastern ensure products are manufactured in an approved facility?
Northeastern University adheres to the codes of conduct of the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and the Worker’s Rights Consortium (WRC).
Can I use the University’s trademarks on a publication or brochure?
